Due to our fast-paced lifestyle and unorganized eating habits, many diseases and body conditions takes over. One of the most common problems that our generation face is Bloating.

What is Bloating?

When your gastrointestinal area is filled with air or gas and you started feeling full or feel tight around your abdominal area, that is when the bloating occurs. The person feels discomfort and the tummy feels like it has swollen.

It can be painful and can cause excessive flatulence(gas). It can also cause burping and blenching.

Why does Bloating Happen?

It is as simple as a balloon that is filled with air. In this case, the balloon is your GI tract and the air is gas. It can simply be caused by the food you ate or drink. Some foods and drinks have more gas than others and that can cause you bloating.

It can also happen because of lactose intolerance. It mostly happens in elders and infants. Another major reason for bloating in many females is menstruation.

Period Bloating

Yes, periods can also cause bloating. It happens before and during the days of menstruation, because hormonal changes such as progesterone and estragon may result in period bloating.

How to reduce period bloating?

A low intake of sodium in your diet can help reduce bloating. Include whole grains, veggies, and fruits in your daily diet, and drinking a lot of water will reduce the pain and the chances of bloating.

Now, let’s talk about what you should not do. Processed food is a big no if you want to reduce the period bloating. Also, you need to cut down on your caffeine and alcohol intake.

How to avoid Bloating?

Food is the main cause of bloating, so to avoid it, you should cut down the following foods and drinks from your daily diet.

· If you have a sensitive stomach then you should avoid eating food that contains gases.

· Vegetables such as asparagus, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, and broccoli can also cause bloating.

· Foods which are rich in starch such as potatoes, corn, and pasta should be cut down.

· Beans and lentils can also affect your stomach.

· Drinks which are carbohydrates such as soda should be ward off.

Other things to take into consideration to reduce bloating are:

· Smoking

· Chewing gum

· Eating quickly

· Eating slowing

· Wearing loose dentures

While many people would associate this problem with just the food they eat, there are many other reasons that can be the cause of the issue.

Apart from the physical aspects, bloating can also be associated with mental health. Yes, when you are too stressed and anxious, your body will react to that accordingly. Too much stress and anxiety can also be the reason for the bloating because sometimes we don’t even realize how much air we are taking in and later on it converts into bloating.

Walking, bicycling, running and other forms of exercise for your digestive system can help you reduce the problem.

“Precaution is better than cure”. Maintain a diary of what you are eating in day-to-day life and if you face the problem of a tight and swollen stomach then you can always look back into the diary of what you have eaten that causes the stomach issue.

Conclusion

These were the things you can do by yourself and if the issue is under control by these remedies, then congratulations! But if the problem gradually increases then consulting the doctor is always the best and ultimate option.

Bloating is something that happens for various reasons because every person’s body is different from others. One thing that works for a person may not work for another, so if you want to get rid of the problem then first you need to understand your body and its needs. And as I mentioned earlier, physical and mental health goes hand in hand. So, if you need a fit body then your mind also needs to be healthy.
